Choosing the right dining table shape

How do you know which dining table is the right shape for you? There is more to it than preferring one form over another. Not that your preference for one shape over the other doesn't matter, but there are a few other things to keep in mind.

The two main factors that should determine the shape of your dining room table are the shape and size of your dining room or dining area and the number of people that usually sit around your dining table. You will find that certain shapes lend themselves better to certain circumstances. When you align the two, you create a flow that makes your space look and function better.

Rectangular dining table shape

A rectangular dining table is perhaps the most common shape, and there's a pretty good reason for that. Most dining rooms are also rectangular. A rectangular dining table is also a good shape for seating more than four people, especially if it comes with an extra leaf to extend the table in case more guests need to be seated.

Ideally, a rectangular table is between 36 and 42 inches wide. Narrower rectangles can work well in a narrow room, but if the table is narrower than 36 inches, it can be difficult to arrange seating on both sides and have enough room for food on the table. If you still prefer a narrow table, consider putting the food on a buffet table so guests can help themselves before sitting down.

Square Dining Table Shape

Square shaped rooms look best with a square dining table . Square dining tables are also a good solution if you don't usually have a large group to sit at. A square table that can be extended with a leaf is good for those times when you need to seat more guests. Two square tables can even be grouped together to create a larger rectangular arrangement for special occasions.

An advantage of square tables is that they provide intimacy and a satisfactory solution for seating a small number of people. It can be odd to have a large rectangular table when only two or three people are there for most of your meals, as a larger table can make the room seem cold.

The round dining table

The square table is not the only solution for a smaller or square shaped room. A round dining table is another option, and it's one of the best shapes for small gatherings because everyone can see each other, conversations are easier to have, and the setting feels cozier and more intimate.

Keep in mind that a round table is not ideal for larger gatherings. A large round table means that although you can still see others, they seem far away, and you may have to shout across the table to be heard. In addition, most dining rooms are not large enough to accommodate large round dining tables.

If you still prefer a round table to a rectangular one and you think you will have to accommodate a larger number of people from time to time, you should consider purchasing a round table with a pull-out leaf. This way you can use your round table most of the time, but extend it when friends or family come over.

The oval dining table shape

An oval dining table resembles a rectangular table in almost all its properties. Visually, it appears to take up less space than a rectangle due to the rounded corners, but this also means that it has less surface area. You may want to consider an oval table if you have a narrower or smaller room and occasionally need space for more people.
