Dining tables are real heroes in the home, so it's important to choose a material that is practical, durable and fits your personal style. What is the difference between hardwood and softwood? And what about a hardwood veneer or melamine? Here's our guide to some of the most common materials and what to consider for each one.

Solid hardwood

Solid wood feels warm and inviting because it is so natural. Hardwoods such as acacia, birch, oak and suar wood are naturally durable and sturdy due to the high density of their wood fibres.

Hardwood ages beautifully as its color deepens and richens over time. Varying grain patterns and color shifts are all part of the natural charm, giving you a truly unique piece.

Solid softwood

Softwoods, such as spruce and pine, are also durable, but because they are not as dense as hardwoods, softwoods tend to scratch more easily. Softwood is often lighter in color than hardwood and often has visible knots, giving the furniture a unique look.

By giving it a little love now and then and taking good care of the wood (re-staining) you can enjoy your softwood tables for many years to come.

Hardwood veneer

Hardwood veneer has the look and feel of natural wood, combined with an easy-care, durable surface that can withstand the knocks and bumps of chairs, children and toys.

Thick particle board is covered with a top layer of durable hardwood to create a strong and stable surface that is much less likely to crack or warp than solid wood.

Melamine

Melamine is very durable and easy to clean, giving you great value for money. The material is a smart choice for families with children as it is moisture and scratch resistant and can withstand spills, popping toys, bumps and splashes. In combination with a sturdy frame, you have a dining table that will withstand the toughest tests.
